Abstract
Rich in natural resources such as otter and beaver, the Pacific Northwest coast was highly sought after by Russian, Spanish, British and American interests. However, as a result of colonial expansion and international treaties, the Alaska coastline was delineated so as to cut off British Columbia from the ocean at 54 40' and the Russian presence declined.
